The Invitation
On 6th March 1957,
Ghana went first.
Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence from colonial rule — a moment whose significance travelled far beyond Ghana's borders. Ghana became a symbol of African independence, self-determination and Pan-African aspiration.
Seventy years later, New York becomes the meeting point where Ghanaian culture, African heritage, African-American identity, Highlife music, business and diaspora relationships converge.
The Concept

Emerging from the meeting of indigenous Ghanaian traditions and Western influences, Highlife grew into a distinctive Ghanaian sound — rhythmic guitar, brass and percussion, danceable melodies and storytelling. It shaped generations of Ghanaian musicians and helped form other African popular genres. Highlife is not simply entertainment. It is part of Ghana's cultural identity.

A defining feature of the celebration is its emphasis on the relationship between Ghana and the African-American community — the historical, cultural and contemporary connections between Africa and African-Americans.
